The School Board Public Hearings are this Monday through Wednesday night from 6 until about midnight. All speaking spots are full, and more than 60 students, parents and other citizens will advocate for the elementary school foreign language programs over the three days (50 of them on Monday night).

The public is welcome to watch either in person (and stand in support of the programs we support) at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road in Falls Church. Or, if you can't make it, you can watch it live on Apple 21, the Fairfax County Public School cable channel (Channel 21).  Several Lake Anne students, former students and parents will testify before the School Board.

This is a perfect opportunity to remind you to write to the School Board and say again that you value the programs that make Lake Anne the strong learning center that it is - even if you have written before - send another letter!! Or send a video! See our own Barrett Family talk about what the Immersion Program has meant to them.

Save Your Labels and Box Tops

The EASIEST way to support Lake Anne is to clip the Box Tops for Education symbols on many popular items from General Mills and other food manufacturers - and send in Campbells "Labels for Education" from soup and other Campbell's/Pepperidge Farm Products.

What is Eligible? You'd be Surprised!

Check out the two websites for a complete list
    Box Tops for Education:http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/clip/Default.aspx

    Campbell's Labels for Education: http://www.labelsforeducation.com/participating-products.aspx

At both sites you can easily register to support Lake Anne - and receive coupons and recipes if you'd like.

If you've already been clipping, and have a little stash (or a big stash) to turn in, send them in your Tuesday folder or drop them off into the "Soup Can" at the front office. We'll take care of the rest!

    Legislation Alert from Virginia PTA

    For Your Information and Consideration

For years, parents and teachers inFairfax have complained about the fact that school starts after LaborDay each year.  In some years, this means school starts on the 2nd, or3rd.  In other years, school doesn't start until the 7th.  When thishappens, the last day of school is in late June.  If we have to addsnow make-up days, this even lengthens the end of school.

This year, we have a chance to make a change.  There are a number of bills before the General Assembly this session on this very issue.  Two bills that the FCCPTA support are SB412 (Vogel) and HB731 (Albo). The Virginia PTA strongly supports SB412 (Vogel) which gives completecontrol to the school divisions. Fairfax County Public Schools assistedin the writing of HB731 (Albo) which also gives control to schooldivisions but provides additional wording that the start could not bebefore the 4th week of August. Through discussion with the GeneralAssembly in the past, it was felt that this might be the best languageto gather support from key individuals.

By allowing local School Boards the optionto set their own calendar, the State Board of Education will not beinvolved with having extra business of providing waivers to systemsrequiring an earlier start because of excessive snow days.

Pleasedirect questions to me at fairfaxparent2parent@yahoo.com or the Virginia PTA Legislation Chair, Kathy Burcher kburcher@verizon.net.

    Volunteers Needed....

There are ALWAYS volunteer opportunities at Lake Anne - tell us what you'd like to do and we'll find a way to use your time and talents well.

Here is just one of the current needs at Lake Anne:

-- Room Parents needed for several classses. What does a room parent do? It is pretty simple really - you assist the teacher by connecting with other parents to help plan celebrations, volunteer in the classroom, etc. It is a great way to meet the other parents at Lake Anne - and the teachers are so very appreciative for the help. Interested in learning more? Please contact Carolyn Low (carolyn@familytalk.org) at 571.490.3523

--GRACE Art Docents needed for several classes - feel free to "adopt" a class that needs a docent, even if it is just for a month or two. Every student at Lake Anne should be part of GRACE Art - if you want to  help make this happen, please contact Maureen Barrett (maureenhbarrett@yahoo.com) to talk more. She'll make it easy - and you'll love the GRACE Art program.

--Library - drop in to help straighten shelves and reshelve books. Ten minutes to two hours - Mrs. Swallow would love to have your help. Contact Mrs. Swallow or Cathy Arney (cathy.arney@fcps.edu) in the library to find out more.
