Attention on SafetyA CNN article this weekend (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/11/03/time.change.ap/index.html?iref=newssearch) highlighted an unexpected side effect of switching from daylight savings time to standard time (like we did this weekend). Apparently, pedestrian accidents spike during the weeks after the change, not due to the earlier, darkness, but because drivers themselves are adjusting to the time change. With this in mind, please use extra caution and care on the roads the next few weeks. Knowing this period of time is more hazardous may be all we need to be a little bit safer and prevent an accident. We encourage your comments, suggestions and feedback on safety at Lake Anne. Please email Erin Schultz (pres@LAESPTA.org) Parent Involvement Team Ready to LaunchDo you want to be part of the Parent Involvement Team? It is time to assemble our Parent Involvement Schools of Excellence Team. It will include 3 teachers, 1 community leader, a principal's representative and 5 parents. We need 5 parents on the team that represent our school population. We are also looking for a support group to assist the team. If you've been waiting for just the right volunteer opportunity, this is it.. Parent representatives must have students at Lake Anne, but do not need to be members of the PTA. There will be approximately 4 meetings this year during school hours. We need to hear from those that are interested by November 2nd. The first meeting will be November 8th. For more information, please contact Lauren Williams or Erin Schultz or go to National PTA website - www.pta.org. Please Return Impact Aid/Federal Survey FormLast week, you should have received an "Impact Aid/Federal Survey" form. This forms helps FCPS identify which parents work at Federal properties in Virginia. In turn, this helps FCPS obtain their share of funds from the government for those properties. Every student has to have this form returned by November 9th. Much of the information is already filled in for you. All responses are completely confidential. It is very important these forms be completed and turned in by every student (not just one per family) by November 9th. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the front office at 703.326.3500 A New Place for Box Tops and Labels!Look by Ms. Cantrell's desk - there is the cutest little soup can collection container for all of our Campbell's Labels and Box Tops. Clean them off your counter - gather them from the fridge - collect them from the drawer that catches everything. And send them to school! Drop them into the collection container and we'll take care of the rest! If you don't make it into school often, send your Box Tops and Campbell's labels to school in the Tuesday folder. Or bring them to the PTA meeting. (Keeping them in a ziplock bag makes it easy for you!) If you aren't sure what to save, send the whole label in and we will trim the part we need. We've banked over 4000 Campbell's labels already - how high can we go? And since Back to School night - over 400 Box Tops have been turned in! Wow! Thank you to all those who have been busy clipping. Each one adds up! Ka-ching! Questions? Need more info? Please contact Carolyn Low (Carolyn@familytalk.org) at 703.476.5312. Volunteers Needed Where Can You Help?Reading Resource Room Can use volunteers at any time but especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Someone who can regularly come in for a set time would be wonderful, but drop-in helpers are also welcome. Please contact Lauren Williams (pi@laespta.org), Emelie Parker (emelie.parker@fcps.edu) or Michelle Taylor (Michelle.Taylor1@fcps.edu). Tech Lab Help But you don't have to be too technical! When the younger students come to the tech lab, they need lots of basic help to get started: clicking on the right icon, navigating to the right page, sending docs to the printer, etc. They spend under an hour in the lab and an extra pair of hands would be a huge bonus to the tech teachers and make their time more fruitful. If you can help, please contact either Lauren Williams (pi@LAESPTA.org) at 703.787.9056 or Mr. Weber (chris.weber@fcps.edu) at 703.326.3500. Mr.Weber has the schedule for all the classes and can let you know when your help is needed the most. Tickling the Ivories? The Music Department is searching for a pianist to accompany the 5th and 6th grade chorus. You would need to be available for our concerts on Thursday December 13th and a few rehearsals on Monday mornings in December. Please email Ms. Bostron at rebecca.bostron@fcps.edu or Mr. Laster at james.laster@fcps.edu if you're interested.
