Travel Through Time with GRACE Art in the Schools
This school year, GRACE Art, a PTA-sponsored art enrichment program at Lake Anne Elementary, will explore the 20th century with the children. We will begin with the American artist, Keith Haring, and his graphic cartoon figures. From there we will study the history of African Art, the cubist style of Pablo Picasso, and the abstract styles of David Hockney and Marc Chagall. We will also explore how horses are depicted in art, and then the paintings of the American artist, Grandma Moses, and the stories they tell. We will finish the year with the sculptures of British artist, Henry Moore. There will be much to learn and enjoy each month through art concepts and featured artists.

Unlocking Creativity with Hands-on, In-class Projects
Each month, parent volunteers for each classroom spend an hour to hour and a half delivering a short presentation and leading the class in a hands-on art project. Projects are age-appropriate and are designed to help bring the lessons to life with suggestions from GRACE and the help of our schools art teachers. Children will be introduced to various media and challenged to develop art skills along the way. Most importantly, the program hopes to unlock their creativity and instill a desire to learn more about the world around them through art.
Making Connections with Science, Math and Social Studies
Art is intertwined with many disciplines. As we present each GRACE Art lesson, we connect the artists work to the unfolding history of their times. We explore how certain works of art reveal mathematical thought. We discuss how science plays a part in the subject and medium artists choose. In cooperation with teachers, we synchronize the presentations with current lessons in the curriculum to enhance what the children are learning whenever possible. The goal is learning not just in art but across the broad spectrum of subjects. |
